Draft statement on situation in Crimea submitted in Russia's State Duma

A draft statement on the situation in Crimea was submitted in State Duma lower house of Russian parliament on Monday by leaders of all four parliamentary factions and State Duma Speaker Sergey Naryshkin. Lawmakers plan to debate the document on Tuesday, March 18.

The lower house intends in the draft statement available to Itar-Tass to voice their support to the people of Crimea in their striving to reunite with Russia. "Welcoming the expression of will made by the people of Crimea at a referendum on March 16, 2014 for accession of the Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol to Russia, the State Duma proceeds from assumption that state authorities acting in Crimea will support inter-confessional accord, language diversity in the republic," the draft resolution reads. For their part, deputies want to assure other people that "they will promote socioeconomic development in Crimea and well-being of its population" in transitional period.

"The State Duma will assist in ensuring security of all people staying in Crimea regardless their citizenship, nationality, language and religious identity and observance of their legitimate rights and freedoms," the document runs.
