No grounds for taking action against Euronews -- Russian communications watchdog

Russia's Federal Supervision Agency for Information Technologies and Communications (Roskomnadzor) has found no legal grounds for taking action against the Euronews TV channel, Roskomnadzor said on Wednesday.

Euronews TV showed in one of its news shows how the Ukrainian troops were allegedly firing at the Russian president's portrait.

Roskomnadzor gave an official response to an inquiry of member of the United Russia faction in the lower house of parliament Mikhail Markelov who requested to check the Euronews video material for violation of Russia's legislation. The parliamentarian said he was disappointed with the communications watchdog position and warned about new possible "surprises" from Euronews.

"The target with a picture on it you report in your inquiry appears on the screen for a little more than five seconds," the watchdog says in its official response, signed by Roskomnadzor deputy head Ma?im Ksenzov. "First, the footage shows a distant view of the target at which the Ukrainian security troops are firing and then gives a zoomed-in view. It is impossible for the viewer to see if the picture on the target resembles the Russian president," the document says. "In this connection, Roskomnadzor has no legal grounds for taking measures against the Euronews TV channel's editorial office."

Markelov told TASS that this explanation and especially the storyboard the watchdog described in its letter look somewhat absurd. Although Roskomnadzor did not have to conduct a technical expert examination in this case, the lawmaker nevertheless hoped that it "would give some kind of legal assessment" to the incident.
