Armenia says Azerbaijan shells its army positions, settlements

Azerbaijan's army has shelled the positions of Armenian forces and settlements in the country's east, the official spokesman of Armenia's defense ministry told TASS on Thursday.

Late on Wednesday, "the units of Azerbaijan's Armed Forces carried out active shelling at the positions of Armenian army and settlements of Armenia in the direction of the town of Vardenis," Artsrun Oganesyan said.

The shelling was conducted from various types of firearms, and several hundred shells were fired from large-caliber machine guns and mortars with the caliber of 60 mm, the spokesman said.

"Armenia's Armed Forces did everything not to violate the agreements on the ceasefire and military advances," Oganesyan stressed.

The situation along the line of contact in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone deteriorated dramatically overnight to April 2 when fierce clashes began. The parties to the conflict accused each other of violating the truce.

At a meeting of chiefs of General Staff of Armenia and Azerbaijan in Moscow on Tuesday, an agreement was reached on the ceasefire from 11:00 a.m. (0800GMT) Moscow time on April 5.
