Kazakhstan puts military units on alert — ministry


Kazakhstan has put all its military units and armed forces institutions on alert, the country's Defense Ministry reported on Monday.

"Due to the introduction of the red terror alert in Almaty, Kazakhstan's military units and armed forces institutions have been put on alert," the ministry said, adding that "security has been tightened at the storehouses for weapons and ammunition."

Kazakhstan's Interior Ministry reports three police officers and one civilian were killed in an armed attack of unidentified persons in Almaty.

"Three police officers in Almaty have died from sustained injuries," the ministry said. One of the attackers attempted to capture a car belonging to a city resident, "as a result of which the driver was injured and later died," the interior ministry added.

"On July 18, at around 11am (8am Moscow time), a police officer sustained a gunshot wound when unidentified persons tried to break into the interior ministry's department in Almaty's Almalinsky district. After this, the perpetrator took the police officer's automatic weapons and fled. The perpetrator used the weapons against 'Buran' police officers that chased him, as a result of which two members of patrol crew sustained gunshot wounds," the ministry noted.

"The suspect was later identified. He was injured and detained by police," the ministry said adding that "two police officers sustained gunshot wounds when detaining him."

According to preliminary reports, the suspect was identified as a 27-year-old native of the Kyzylordinsky district (in Kazakhstan's south) "suspected of killing a woman last weekend." "The operational plan 'Siren' was imposed in the city, all police officers were tasked with detaining an accomplice of the detained criminal," the interior ministry noted.

The ministry's press service said one terrorist was detained by security forces.

Tengrinews.kz website reports police have cordoned off the railway station in Almaty.

Earlier on Monday, unknown persons attacked the building of a district police department in Almaty and a department of Kazakhstan's National Security Committee. A red terror alert was declared in the city, security forces carry out an operation to detain the individuals involved in these attacks. Reports say that two law enforcers were killed in a shootout.
