Churkin: Russia hopes for ICRC help in distributing relief aid

Russia hopes that the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) will participate in the distribution of relief aid delivered to southeast Ukraine, Vitaly Churkin, Russia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, told journalists on Friday.

"We hope that the ICRC will take part in aid distribution. They said that it was possible," Churkin said, noting the humanitarian situation in eastern Ukraine continued deteriorating while the intensity of shelling by the Ukraine army has no signs of decreasing.

"Thousands of people need help," Churkin said. He criticized the Ukrainian side for intentionally delaying the delivery of relief aid to civilian population.

"They did everything to put up barriers," the Russian diplomat stressed.

About 270 trucks with almost 2,000 tonnes of food, water, baby food and medical products left the Moscow region on August 12. The convoy arrived at the Russia-Ukraine border on August 14.

"We waited long enough but now time has come to move forward," Churkin said.
