Remarks on unilateral amendments to Russia-NATO Council Act incorrect -- Lavrov

Remarks on the unilateral introduction of changes to the fundamental document of the Russia-NATO Council are incorrect both from the practical and legal points of view, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Thursday.

"As for the statement on the intention to amend the Founding Act of the Russia-NATO Council, I would like to remind that the document was drafted by all members of the Russia-NATO Council," the Russian minister said, commenting on US President Barack Obama's statement on the plans to introduce changes to the document. Obama made such statement during his visit to Estonia on Wednesday.

"The document can be changed only collectively, and any unilateral move can be made only in regard to the withdrawal from this document," Lavrov said.

"However, stating that one country decided to change the collective document, which was signed by 28 countries, is quite incorrect both legally and politically," the Russian diplomat said.
