Any peacekeeping operation in Ukraine to complicate implementation of Minsk accords

A launch of whatever peacekeeping operation in Ukraine will only complicate the implementation of the Minsk accords, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov said on Thursday as he took the floor at a high-level conference on possible peacekeeping operations under the auspices of the European security organization OSCE .

"Regarding the internal Ukrainian conflict, I'm convinced it's important to concentrate efforts now on support for the OSCE's Special Monitoring Mission (SMM) , which de facto has begun to perform the main tasks inherent in peacekeeping operations, inclusive of the monitoring of ceasefire, verification of the withdrawal of forces, and the crucial deterrence function," Gatilov said.

"In the meantime, the start of whatever peacekeeping operation in Ukraine will only complicate the implementation of political, economic and humanitarian provisions of the Minsk accords," he said.
