Germany's defense minister says weapons supplies will aggravate Ukrainian conflict

Germany opposes supplies of arms to the combat area in Ukraine, the country's Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen said on Thursday on the sidelines of a NATO ministerial meeting.

"A considerable amount of arms in the region won't help resolve the conflict but will just increase the amount of suffering for the population," she said.

On Sunday, the electronic edition of the New York Times said that General Phil Breedlove, Supreme Allied Commander Europe and Commander, US European Command, as well as many representatives of the Obama administration and Pentagon were looking at providing lethal military assistance to Ukraine.

Earlier on Thursday Russian Foreign Ministry's official spokesman said the possible supplies of US weapons to Ukraine threaten Russia's security.

Finnish President Sauli Niinisto and French President Francois Hollande also said their countries will provide no military aid to Ukraine since supplying weapons will aggravate the crisis.
