Turchinov, Yatsenyuk propose national unity roundtables modelled on OSCE

Parliament-appointed acting President Alexander Turchinov and parliament-appointed Prime Minister Arseny Yatsenyuk on Thursday, May 8, proposed organising national unity roundtables using the experience of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).

The issues to be discussed at these roundtables will include decentralisation of power, local government reform, balance between different branches of government, protection of ethnic minorities' rights, overhaul of relations between the state and society, judicial and law enforcement reform.

In their joint statement, Turchinov and Yatsenyuk stated their "readiness to talk with all who have legitimate goals and are prepared to defend them using lawful means".

"We invite representatives of all political forces from all regions and civil society to begin a dialogue on all issues and challenges that are facing the Ukrainian people," they said.

They are planning to use the OSCE experience in this dialogue. "We hope that the comprehensive nature of the OSCE", of which 57 countries are members, including Russia, the United States and EU countries, "will help to create the most favourable conditions for conducting the roundtables", the statement said.

It is expected that the arrangements to be made at the roundtables will be implemented by the parliament, including by amending the constitution and laws.

At the same time, Turchinov and Yatsenyuk said they would not stop the punitive operation in the South-East of the country.
