Russian citizen was in a group of observers detained in Ukraine, Churkin confirms

Russian Ambassador to the United Nations Vitaly Churkin has confirmed that a Russian citizen was with one of the groups of OSCE observers detained in Ukraine.

"We're seriously concerned over the incidents with two groups of OSCE observers. A Russian citizen was in one of them," Churkin told a session of the UN Security Council on Wednesday.

UN Security Council members should call on Kiev to immediately stop its army operation in Ukraine's Southeast in line with the roadmap of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, he added.

The diplomat expressed regret that some Security Council members "keep justifying the military actions of the Kiev authorities in every possible way.

Ukrainian election was not free or democratic in true sense of the word, Churkin says. Russia hopes Ukrainian politicians don't disappoint expectations of people, he added.

Russia is ready to help Kiev organize dialogue with Ukraine's southeastern regions and develop economic cooperation as soon as the punitive operation ends, Churkin says. Russia proposes immediately involving United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon in the efforts to settle the crisis and stop violence in Ukraine's East.
