Russian diplomats to meet detained Roman Seleznyov on July 14

Russian diplomats will meet the detained Russian national, Roman Seleznyov, and his lawyers on Guam Island on July 14, an employee of the Russian General Consulate in San Francisco said on Saturday.

The U.S. authorities have given consent and permission for Roman's personal meeting with representatives of the Russian embassy and General Consulate.

"Our mission's aim is to clarify the situation to be able to defend the rights and interests of the citizen of Russia and check the actions of the U.S. authorities to ensure the necessary conditions for his sojourn," the Russian diplomat explained.

"We also want to hear Roman's requests and complaints. We are going to seek their implementation by relevant U.S. services," he added.

Roman Seleznyov was detained on the Maldives at the U.S. request and transferred to Guam under the U.S. jurisdiction. The U.S. authorities suspect him of stealing and then selling information on the credit cards of U.S. consumers in a period from October 2009 to February 2011. In March 2011, Seleznyov was charged on 29 points in absentia in the State of Washington. He may face decades in jail and a fine worth millions of dollars if his guilt is proven.

Besides, the authorities in the State of Nevada have filed a criminal lawsuit against Seleznyov on suspicion of links to a criminal group that dealt with extortion.
