Medvedev: US sanctions against its allies' banks example of uncivilised behaviour

U.S. sanctions against the banks of its allies are an example of uncivilised behaviour, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said at a meeting with business people on Friday.

CEO of the Russian oil company Lukoil Vagit Alikperov said that under the pressure from the United States the French bank BNP Paribas "has paid a giant fine for Iran."

"You have mentioned a number of foreign banks that were affected, including the Paribas bank," Medvedev replied. "We can take it in different ways but in any case, here in Russia we see this as the situation when one ally state is pressing very outrageously another state, a member of the same political and military bloc, which are, so to say, in harness."

"All banks are going through a rather tense situation," Alikperov said.

"Of course, this measure of intimidation is an example of uncivilised behaviour," Medvedev said. "For us and for the whole world community it is a distinct signal how certain political forces can behave when problems emerge.
