US sanctions, Ukraine's pro-NATO drive poisoning relations with Russia - Medvedev

U.S. decision to pass a law on anti-Russian sanctions and Ukraine's plans to drop its non-aligned status for a possible membership of NATO will require an appropriate reaction on the part of Russia, Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev wrote on Tuesday in Facebook.

"U.S. President has signed an anti-Russian law empowering any U.S. president to introduce sanctions against Russia anytime," he wrote. "Like it was with the Jackson-Vanik amendment, our relations with America will be poisoned for decades to come."

"Ukrainian President has submitted to the Verkhovna Rada (the national parliament - TASS) a bill on dropping the country's off-bloc status or, in essence, an application for joining NATO, which turns Ukraine into a potential enemy of Russia," Medvedev said.

"Both decisions will have extremely deplorable aftermaths and our country will have to react to them," he indicated.
