Vladikavkaz submarine upgraded in Severodvinsk to join Russia's Navy on September 23

Russia's large diesel-electric submarine Vladikavkaz upgraded at the Zvezdochka shipyard in Severodvinsk in north Russia will be delivered to Russia's Navy on September 23, shipyard spokeswoman Nadezhda Shcherbinina told TASS on Thursday.

"A certificate for the transfer of the diesel-electric submarine Vladikavkaz to Russia's Navy is planned to be signed at the Zvezdochka shipyard on September 23," she said.

The submarine completed successfully sea trials in August. It was reported earlier that the submarine was scheduled to be delivered in November 2015 in accordance with the state contract.

The submarine's service life will be extended for another ten years.

The Vladikavkaz will become the second diesel submarine upgraded for Russia's Navy over the past two decades by the Zvezdochka shipyard, a specialist in repairing and upgrading nuclear submarines.

In 2013, the Zvezdochka shipyard delivered the same-class Kaluga submarine to Russia's Navy.

According to public data, the Project 887EKM Varshavyanka-class (Paltus) submarine Vladikavkaz (NATO reporting name: Kilo) was built at the Krasnoye Sormovo plant in the Volga city of Nizhny Novgorod in 1989.

The submarine is designed to fight against enemy submarines and ships, as well as to defend naval bases, coastal and naval communications and to conduct reconnaissance and patrolling activities.

The submarine has a displacement of 2,300 tons, a submerged speed of 17 knots (about 31 km/h), a depth of submersion of 300 meters. It is 72.6 meters long. Its crew totals 52. Its cruising capacity is 45 days.

The submarine is armed with six 533mm torpedo tubes.
