US proposals on Ukraine involve territorial concessions to Russia -- media
To get a Ukraine deal done, the US is ready to concede territories to Russia, but it is also seeking to benefit itself by securing the rights to billions of dollars worth of Ukraine's natural resources, the Canada-based The Globe and Mail newspaper reported, citing a source.
According to the newspaper, US President Donald Trump discussed these conditions during a telephone conversation with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on February 22. The newspaper's source stated that the conversation was constructive and primarily focused on getting the Ukraine deal done.
Earlier, the newspaper also reported that during the phone call, Trudeau emphasized the need to include security guarantees for Ukraine in any potential peace agreement with Russia, insisting that the deal should not be seen as giving in to Moscow. According to the newspaper, Trump did not agree with Trudeau's position but also did not explicitly oppose it.
The Donetsk People's Republic, the Lugansk People's Republic, the Zaporozhye and Kherson regions became part of Russia following referendums held there on September 23-27, 2022. Crimea and Sevastopol became part of the country after a referendum held in March 2014.
