RF not to allow Georgia’s new military adventure - Medvedev

The key current task is to ensure security of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said at a signing ceremony of the agreements on amity, cooperation and mutual assistance between Russia and Abkhazia, as well as Russia and South Ossetia on Wednesday.

“The key current task for us is to ensure security of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. The signed agreements envisage that our countries will take necessary joint measures to ward off a threat to peace, counteract problems in this sphere and combat acts of aggression against them,” Medvedev emphasized.

“We will render all necessary support to each other, including the military one. This possibility is stipulated in Article 51 of the UN Charter that proclaims the right for individual and collective self-defense.

I state that Georgia’s repeated aggression (they did not even conceal vengeful sentiments) would lead to a catastrophe at a regional scale. Therefore, no one should have any doubts: we will not allow a new military adventure.

The agreements signed today have great importance for the development of the multinational Caucasus region. Firm security and stability is a pledge of the peaceful life for all peoples living here. This is a very important condition for restoring peace and good neighborliness, an upsurge of economy and the social sector of both republics,” the Russian president said.
