Russian Foreign Ministry has accused US State Secretary of gross distortion of facts concerning Russia and the situation in the Caucasus

The Russian Foreign Ministry has accused US State Secretary Condoleezza Rice of gross distortion of facts concerning Russia and the situation in the Caucasus that’s been brought about by Georgia’s aggression against South Ossetia.

Russia’s Foreign Ministry says in comments that the distorted facts come as no major surprise, given that Washington is set to support the bankrupt regime in Tbilisi. In her statements Ms. Rice deplored the death of what she described as several Russian peacekeepers but chose to a void mentioning the killing by the Georgian army units of more than 1,500 South Ossetian civilians who were mostly Russian nationals.

The attack mounted was therefore one against Russia, so Moscow had no choice but resort to its right to self-defence in keeping with the UN Charter.

The Russian Foreign Ministry emphasized that Russia threatens no one, no does it lay claims to other countries’ territory.

So attempts to punish Russia, as it were, seem counterproductive, and Russia’s partners that have taken an impartial stand on the situation tend to agree. But Moscow reiterates that it’s prepared to cooperate with the United States in any format.
