Russia says NATO breaches UN resolution on Libya

The NATO-led coalition violates the United Nations Resolution on Libya and thus deteriorates prospects of a peaceful settlement in the country, according to Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko who heads the Russian delegation at the annual OSCE security conference.

“Today we see how NATO-led coalition in its actions in Libya goes beyond the framework of resolutions 1970 and 1973 of the UN Security Council. Disproportionate use of force results in big losses among civilian population and deteriorates prospects of a peaceful settlement,” he told Tass on Thursday.

”Besides, NATO strategic concept which unambiguously and clearly states that NATO will respect UN Security Council authority and international law norms is currently undergoing the first endurance test in Libya. For Russia it is of specific importance that the provision on compliance with international law is the basis for interaction between the Russian Federation and NATO,” Grushko said.
